Halfway Home

Creating music to leave it all behind.

Halfway Home Portrait

Who is this, and what do they do?

I’ve been doing ‘this’ for long enough now that I should probably be a lot better at doing it than I actually am - probably a small factor in my complete lack of success* to date. So what is ‘this’? By ‘this’ I’m referring to the creation of what you’ll hopefully consider ‘music’. “How? Why? Where?” I hear you cry. OK, first, how… If push comes to shove, I’d reluctantly refer to myself as a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. To live up to that claim, I have to ensure that at least once a year I write, perform and record something akin to a song. So, yeah, ‘how’ is basically mucking around with an instrument until I hear something I think is nice, humming along to it until it sounds a bit nicer, mumbling that tune until I hear some words that might eventually make sense, and then hit ‘record’. Why? Why not. Where? The UK.

Releases

‘Releases’ refers to the process of uploading sound files of my recorded music to streaming music services so I can listen to them on the train, ten years from now, and so on. As a bonus, should anyone else (may you?) fancy a cheeky listen, they’re freely able to do so.

Lullabies & Lobby Music (2023)

For the third year running, and the fourth time in total, I threw myself at the challenge of February Album Writing Month (FAWM). FAWM is basically a community of people, each attempting to write 14 songs in the 28 days of February. It’s a personal challenge, so it’s totally up to the individual what they want or expect to produce during the month. It’s also an incredibly supportive and friendly community, and where I discover most of my new music for the year! For me, if I write one song, then it’s probably one more than I would have managed without taking part in FAWM. However, this year - once more - it was a pretty fruitful month!

Memories (2022)

Written and recorded during February Album Writing Month (FAWM), it was a more productive and satisfying February compared to the previous year. Not every song was a ‘smash’, but out of the collection of music created, there’s enough music here I’ll happily listen back to later to make the whole endeavour worthwhile.

Smatterings (2022)

A collection of some off-cuts of recordings that basically don’t really belong anywhere else.

Grinding to a Halt (2021)

The nine-year hiatus would suggest music took the back-seat. And although there is a small amount of truth to that, the real-truth is that some of the best music I have ever been involved with was being created during this period as a result of the reformation of an dormant collaborative side-project. I remain ever-hopeful this will eventually see the light of day. Returning to FAWM (February Album Writing Month) in an effort to kick a couple of new creations across the line, things got off to a slow start - and then a little bogged down in unnecessarily polish once things got going - but just finishing anything was a turnaround from recent history, so job done!

Under the Weather (2012)

This album was the result of a friend introducing me to February Album Writing Month (FAWM) - the challenge to write 14 songs in the 28 days of February. Over time my process of writing material had gradually been stretched out with the reliance on recording, and basically fiddling with the material instead of making the song. The notion of having a day or two to find an idea and bring it to some sort of life was an intriguing one - and definitely a way of getting past this habit. I decided I wanted to record everything live, no edits, not over-dubs, and see what happens. This happened.

The Tapes (2011)

The Tapes was an idea born of a desire to collaborate with old friends. The idea of using old tapes is born out from the feeling that these little cartridges of captured magnetic information somehow embody the complete moment they capture. More than this, they carry the scars of history leading to this moment and beyond. (That was copied verbatim from what was written on the original Tapes release. What a bunch of nonsense. More follows….)
These six 'moodments' were each instigated by the magnetic imprints placed long ago onto a piece of tape. This magnetic memory has now been listened to by a mind machine, and then built upon using microphones and tools. (nonsense)
The results can be described as anything from pointless to hypnotic. (true)

Eunoia (2011)

So, what if I actually attempt to write some songs, which have a beginning, and middle, possibly and end. If I work out how to play it from the start to the finish. If, instead of just humming a melody, I see what words might fit, and what they might mean. What if I don’t worry if something sounds happy, or sad, or simple, or catchy. What if I try and sing properly. What happens if I share the music with everyone I know, others that I might, bang on about it on this so-called ‘internet’. What if? Well, I’ll get a number one record. That, sadly, no longer pumps out a monthly revenue stream.
